Tuesdays with Morrie: An Old Man, a Young Man, and Life’s Greatest Lesson
Author: Mitch Albom
Publisher: Doubleday
Pages: 224

Tuesdays with Morrie is about the meaning of life and understanding that “once you learn how to die, you learn how to live.” It is the story of Mitch Albom and his reconnection with his mentor and former college professor Morrie Schwartz in the months before his death. During this time Morrie and Mitch discuss topics such as family, fear, death and love. The financially successful sports writer Mitch Albom struggles to disengage from popular culture while his old professor, Morrie Schwartz, grapples to accept his impending death from ALS.

Morrie has many philosophies on life and just as many aphorisms to illustrate those ideas, such as learning to “forgive yourself and to forgive others.” He says that if his philosophies are followed, they will lead to a truly fulfilled life. Tuesdays with Morrie’s main message is that “love is the only rational act.” Over the course of Mitch and Morrie’s Tuesday talks, they brought up many interesting ideas about emotions, love and death. One of Morrie’s main lessons was that “the culture we have does not make people feel good about themselves. And you have to be strong enough to say if the culture doesn’t work, don’t buy it.”

Morrie also talked about the impact one person can have on the rest of your life. The story of balances the more depressing topics of death and sickness with the ideas of love, family and friendship. It is broken up into small chapters, which makes it an easy read. Although it comes off as somewhat of a self help, book there are little lessons that Morrie teaches that can be applied to every day life.  Through Morrie’s death, he attempts to share his wisdom on how to live in a way that is inspirational and makes the reader think about their own views on life, and how it should be lived. Overall, the book is a nice little read and worth the time if the reader is willing to think about the ideas presented
