A person without any aim in life is like a rudderless ship. He has no destination in sight. He does not know in which direction to move.
Every person should have an aim in life. And should work for it. The ambition should not remain just a resolution or a dream that has not come true.
The nature of ambition varies from person to person depending on family background, upbringing, social position, economic conditions and environment. Some people’s aim is to amass wealth anyhow. They may do business. Or with this aim in mind, they may demand huge dowries at the time of marriage of their sons. The idea to make quick money leads to anti-social activity like corruption, smuggling, black marketing, gambling.
Money is not everything in life. There are other worth while pursuits. Some people yearn for fame and spend their lives seeking it though there may not be much wealth coming in.
Some others may wish to serve people. Swami Vivekananda believed: “service of man is service to god”. Gandhi loved people and left his profession to serve his countrymen. Mother Teresa rendered service to the destitute and the poor who needed love and care.
Some young folk with good looks wish to become film stars. Here, if a person succeeds both fame and wealth are there.
A number of persons also wish to go overseas to work. The wages abroad are fabulous. The standard of living is high. Some take to politics to ‘serve’ the people.
My aim is to become a teacher. There are good reasons for it. First, around 50 per cent of people are illiterate. They are deep in ignorance. They may be superstitious. When I become a teacher. I will be able to remove these to some extent.
Second, though there is not much money in the profession it is called a noble profession. Teachers are respected by students and parents. I will follow simple living and high thinking.
Third, the profession will enable me to serve the cause of education. Plato said: “Education is the turning of the inner eye towards light.” This I like.
Fourth, the teaching profession calls for dedication and missionary zeal. I have these. I have the aptitude too. Teaching will give me immense job satisfaction.
In the final, students of today are the citizens of tomorrow. The teaching profession will enable me to make my contribution to the building of character of my students and inculcating a spirit of patriotism and nationalism in them. They will be better citizens that the country could be proud of.
I am studying with the teaching profession in mind and will get trained for it. I have this aim and am working steadily in that direction.
